My Third Open Heart Surgery

On the 10th of August 2003 I had my catheterization done to look at the function of my heart and make sure everything was alright before my third open heart surgery was done, it was very scary but the doctors had to inject dye through the probe going to my heart to see if there was any problem they had to encounter, or if there was any new changes occurring that they did not know of.

On 14th of November 2003 I had my third open heart surgery, this surgery was called the Fenestrated Extra Cardiac Fontan, I was 32 months or 2 years and 8th months at the time of this procedure, this is how I look, the cutes and most handsome baby you could ever see, boy I was moving along on a great speed although I was not eating well or taking any thing by mouth I was still looking great a lot underweight but coping. I was admitted on the same day I had the surgery done. I was taken to the hospital by my parents around 6.30 am, my surgery was the first to be done by me surgeon Dr. Ralph Moscow, I was glad to be out and around but I did not know the fear my parents were sharing with each other, they were very scared and they kept crying most of the time because they had know the outcome of the other surgeries and they were very susceptible to this one. The doctor told them this was the last open heart surgery they had to perform on me, it was one of three step and this was the final stage of the third surgery. They told them it was a surgery they do often and everything should be alright. The nurse came and fix me up to be taken to the OR my parents only went with me near the door they could not go inside my mom were distraught she was crying non stop and praying for me I was given a drowsy medication so I was half asleep but I was still alert and wanted them with me but I guess not, they wheel me away to the room with speed for the doctors was waiting to perform the surgery.

After hours and hours of waiting, praying to the God Almighty and very troublesome and restless one of the doctors from the OR went and told my parents the surgery was successful and they were taking me to the PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) My parents were thanking God for my safe operation and they rushed to see me in the Unit. I had wires hooked up my entire body it did not have a space left for anyone to see, I had the annoying chest tube drainage that was making a lot of bubbling noise, I had a back up pacing wire, My Foley the catheter was hooked up to my bladder and all the arterial line for blood and other mediations was hooked up on me, my chest had a long plaster were the surgery was done and I was fast asleep with all the anesthesia pumped in me. One day after the surgery my pressure kept going up my heart was going at a fast pace I was getting fever and the chest tube draining was not taking water away from my lungs and heart fast enough. This is the time the doctors was very concerned my liver was infected and I was getting fat with all the fluid inside of me, my pressure keep going up I was given a lot of different medication to send it down but to no success, My mom was by my bed every single minute she did not leave me to go anywhere. And then suddenly it happened around 4 am My heart drowned one more time with all the fluid surrounding it I went under cardiac arrest again for a couple of minutes imagine my heart stop beating again after all those other arrest I had before. Would you believe a doctor was there on time to make another cut in my chest and immediately drain all the fluid that was in my lungs to save me one more time so I could be with my loving and devoted parents, but you got to believe this I am one of God’s angel to be alive today, he brought me in this world to fulfill some great work of his to which I am very obligated.

My life was save once more due to miracles, after this episodes I started to recover very slowly in the unit, because of no blood flow to my brain after the arrest the doctors were afraid of some brain injury so I had neurology came to do test on my head to see if there was any defect the result came back negative but I was doing some abnormal things at the time so everyone presume that something was not right, but it was one of the medication, when the doctors stop it I was alright. Gradually I started to feel a little better and my breathing machine was taken of I was able to breathe on my own so I did not need the machine, next my Foley was removed I was able to urine on my own which was another great step for my recovery. I remained in the PICU for almost three weeks before I was sent on the regular floor to recuperate, the chest tube drainage did not came of the fluid was still draining so I had to take it with me on the floor. After one month in the hospital the tube finally came of but not without any danger my mom notice the swelling of my right arm and upper body with lots of blue vein and bring it to the doctors attention and what do you think it was ? My fontan after surgery was clotted although I was on an anticoagulant it still clotted the doctors got very scared because there was no proper blood flow taking place and I was at a high risk for another heart failure. I had to do another catheterization for the doctors to see if they could remove the clots. A very strong medication was injected through the probe to see if the clot could dissolve there was not much success. They had to put coils in my right and left mammary arteries to get better flow

With the clot not dissolving the doctors decided to take me back to the PICU to give me another strong medication to see if it could be dissolve, but no success instead of one dose two dose of the same medication was given to me to see if the problem could be solved, but still there was no success. The doctors could not get any blood vein to draw blood from me so a permanent arterial line was hooked up in my groin for them to get blood from me.

After a lot of echocardiogram to see proper blood in the valve the doctors were still unable to see blood flow from the LSVC (left superior vena cava) the swelling had improved but still with prominent venous pattern in the upper chest. Every time they told me I could go home some thing strange occurs again so I had to remain, that was very exhausting to my family who were so tired of living in the hospital it was a nightmare for them.

Christmas I was in the hospital taking numerous test doing Echocardiogram, EKG, X-Rays to make sure my heart was working well. And of course I am on a prescription anticoagulant for life they’re ramping up my dose slowly on that Clotting is measured with a number called the INR or International Normalized Ratio an INR of 1.0 means you have a typed blood clotting time. INR of 2.0 means that it takes you blood twice as long to clot. My INR is all over but I need to get up to 0.3 to 3.5 the doctors said my level have to be high so that there should be no clotting to endanger my life. The valve is designed to be smoothes as possible but if it is not smoothes as the original tissue when the blood passed through it there’s a slightly increased rush of platelets sticking to the valve and clotting. The valve would not be affected but if one of those clots were to break of it could travel to my brain or kidney and cause serious problems so my clotting have to be reduced to ensure safety. The downside to it if I cut myself it will be harder to get the blood to stop.

I remained in the hospital for another month with new problems after problems occurring, the doctors keep finding all kind of complications in my heart I had to do a lot of other test to see if I was in a fit condition to be discharge from the hospital. We were all praying so hard for my discharge we did not want anything else to happen.Thank God I was eventually discharge on January 4th 2004 from the hospital.
