My Second Open heart Surgery

On June 19th 2002 I had my second open heart surgery. I was 15th months old at the time this surgery was called the Bidirectional Glenn, before this surgery was done the doctors had to do a catheterization or angiogram. On March 26th 2002 this catheterization was done. This is were a needle was inserted in my groin (a vein in my leg) this probe went all the way to my heart where dye was injected to take pictures of my heart for the doctors to get an idea what the next surgery would be like.

My parents were very scared for me because after that first ordeal they did not want to go through with this second surgery. But the doctors told them my two blood the bad and the good blood were mixing (the carbonated and the oxygenated) and if I did not have proper flow and this could be very dangerous for me but the surgery had to be done. I was underweight because I was not eating well I was fed from an NGTube since birth to now so my health was very poor at the time of the surgery, I had poor reflux I keep vomiting every thing I take in my stomach nothing stay down my parents had to take there time with me I was fed with a pump that gives me little by little milk at a time so that it could remain in my stomach, I needed my calories to survive so this is the only way I could get it.

The doctors wanted to put a peg in my stomach but my parents was to afraid so they kept the tube through my nose into my tummy and up to this day I am still being fed through my nose. The nurse prepared me for surgery on June 19th the anesthesia doctors came and brief my parents on the effects of anesthesia and they sign the necessary papers. I was almost 15th months old very cute and did not know what all the commotion was about, but the doctors told my parents every thing should be alright, and in they took me to the OR with by loving parents crying and praying to God for my surgery to be a success. After 7 long hours of surgery it was a success and I was taken to the 9th floor in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for recovery. My recovery took a very long time because of a lot of set backs, My lungs was accumulating water the fluid was not draining out and my pressure was going high all the time. I had a high fever and with all the fluid in me I was swollen like a balloon.

The doctors were very concerned about my health they taught the recovery should be normal but with all the ups and down with the fluid drainage it was getting pretty rough. And then shocking news the water circulating around my heart drowned it, and I went under cardiac arrest and once again one of the surgeons had to take immediate action, by making an incision in my chest to try and drain the water around my heart because the other chest tube was not draining anything .This was like a repeat of the first time when I was hospitalized. It was a nightmare to each and everyone of my family, especially my devoted parents who was really traumatized by all this new events of my life. With the help of the angels and the doctors who were God in disguise I was able to pull through this second surgery.

I had numerous episodes of very high fever the highest fever was approximately 105.2. I was given a lot of different antibiotic to prevent me from getting serious infection in my heart, countless blood test was administered upon me to check my red and white blood cells to see what was causing the fever but the infectious disease doctors did not see anything wrong that was causing the fever .I had to be hospitalized for almost a month due to this set back of my health. Gradually the test tube, the pacemaker and the ventilator machine was removed from me, my parents was so happy because they were able to hold me in their loving arms with there tender care, and all the medications I received were able to cure me. After one long month of pain and suffering for me and everyone I was able to be discharge from the hospital, but had to be taken for frequent visit with my cardiologist and pediatrician.

At home with the help of all the therapist and my parents I was able to get a little better I was making progress in walking, talking, smiling, I was not making any progress in taking any kind of baby formular, baby cereal or fruits in my mouth, but I was trying to cope with all the new things that was being put in my way for recovery, and believe me it really helped a lot. My recuperation at home was a long and slow process but in the end it paid off I was able to do all the little things that a 17ths months baby could do after an open heart surgery. I love every bit of it. It was heavenly to be alive.

My social worker apply to Make-A-Wish Foundation for a gift and what a surprise I received a gift from them with a paid vocation trip to Walt Disney Orlando Florida. It was one of the best gifts I had ever received, the holiday was fun and I had a wonderful time with my parents, brothers and sisters my little sister was one month old at the time so she did not have too much fun but I did. I was a little under the hot weather but I coped pretty well. We had to stay in a hotel close to Walt Disney it had a swimming pool and free breakfast, boy it was fun I enjoyed every bit of it when I came back I send photos of my self to Make-A- Wish Foundation thanking them for there wonderful donations and contribution to me and my family, it had really help to make my life brighter and happpier. I thank them from my heart without this gift I don't think I would ever have gone to Walt Disney. Thank You All.
