Shiva Persad born on 3rd
March 2001 has a
Complex Cyanotic Heart Disease with Heterotaxy and Single-Ventricle
Anatomy. Because of the different way his heart is situated the doctors
said that he is not a candidate for a heart transplant. He suffered several
cardiac arrests in the neotal period one time for almost 45 minutes and has undergone multiple cardiac surgeries
at the New York Presbyterian Hospital. His most recent surgery was on November
14th, 2003. He had multiple post-operative complications including multiple
areas of clot formation, after undergoing his third open heart surgery , he
remained in the hospital for quite some time because of numerous complications
and setbacks and was finally discharged from the hospital on January 2, 2004.
Since his last surgery the doctors are unable to see blood flow in his Left
Superior Vena Cava(LSVC). Initially, his left side of upper body is swollen,
It is improved a little but still with prominent venous pattern. He has coils
in his Right and Left Internal Mammary arteries. He was supposed to do an MRI
to see how the clots formation was, but the doctors are susceptible to do
it because of the coils in his heart, they have decided to do a CT Scan instead
but still not sure still pending. Shiva is currently stable from a cardiovascular
perspective but he has other major issues.
Shiva also has a Malrotation of
his intestine and since birth he has vomitted frequently although they have
been less frequent recently he takes very little food by mouth and requires
tube feedings. This problem requires feeding theraphy. In addition, he requires
physical therapy. Shiva is also immunocompromised (this is part of the spectrum
of his cardic syndrome) and has had multiple episodes of pneumonia, sinusitis
and fever, he is also on a high level of Anti-coagulant to prevent further
clots from occurring, if he get a cut it bleeds contineously for almost an hour before it stops. He has a dangerous clotting problem that if the anticoagulant is stoped he could die. He is still a very sick child with his severe heart
conditions but God is his angel and looks after him.
For now his medications
include: Enapril,Coumadin, Penicillin, and Prevacid. He is on a regular supply
of PCN VK, because he is Asplenic(meaning his spleen doesn't work well.) this medication helps to prevent him from getting any infections.
ON his left LSVC there is a little blood flow because of clots formation we don't know how big the clots are therefore the CT Scan have to be done inoder to see this. I love my son very much and any helpful medical information that can be bought forward to assist us in any where possible pertaining to his health will be highly appreciated. With new research on heart defects all the time I know there is a possibility of new technique that can be helpful to us in the future especially the clotting of valves in the heart. Thank you.
